“Is this jar full?” the guide asked again. This time the merchants were wary and said, “Probably not.”
“You’re getting it,” he said. And he reached back under the counter and produced a bag of sand. He poured it over the rocks and gravel until all the space was filled.
“Is this jar full?” once more he asked. “No!” the students shouted. Then he grabbed a pitcher of water and poured until the jar of rocks, gravel and sand was filled to the brim.
The point of Stephen Covey’s story isn’t to say that you can always fit some more things in, e.g., if we can just chase down a few more quality links, we’ll be golden. But that “if you don’t put the big rocks in first, you’ll never get them in at all.”
