Leading a Capital Campaign

The Eight-Stage Process

A successful stewardship campaign has to lead a congregation through an eight-stage process of transformation.

  1. ESTABLISH URGENCY. Assess competing realities and identify potential train wrecks, and major opportunities.
  2. CREATE A GUIDING COALITION. Recruit mavens (opinion leaders) to lead the campaign and equip them to work as a team.
  3. CLARIFY THE VISION. Write a vision document to strategically define and tactically direct the campaign.
  4. COMMUNICATE THE VISION. Use every strategic vehicle possible to communicate the vision of the campaign.
  5. GET RID OF ROADBLOCKS. Change systems and structures that undermine the vision or create roadblocks.
  6. CELEBRATE WINS. Recognize and reward people who make organizational “wins” possible.
  7. GATHER MOMENTUM. Consolidate momentum by introducing change agents and creating critical mass.
  8. THINK CULTURAL. Be careful to anchor every new approach in the culture of the organization. And keep focused.
